Samba4 for acting as built-in AD Server
For some time ReadyNAS boxes have been able to join AD networks and therefore authenticate connections against AD accounts (this is good). Alas despite the fact that Open Directory is based on OpenLDAP (for Linux) and of course the fact that ReadyNAS runs on Linux, and despite the fact that Apple has considerably increased its market share, there is still no progress on NetGear providing a means of linking to Open Directory (or OpenLDAP) systems.
An alternative approach has occurred to me, Samba4 has finally been officially released, see
https://www.samba.org/samba/news/releases/4.0.0.html
The major new feature of Samba4 is its ability to act as a fullblown AD Server (previous versions of Samba have been limited to acting as an NT style Domain controller). While one possible solution would be for Apple to add similar capabilities to their own SMBx software in OS X Server, or to install ones self Samba4 in OS X, another option would be to run Samba4 on the ReadyNAS box and have it (the ReadyNAS) act as the AD Server. Obviously existing Windows Server based sites should continue using a standard Windows AD server, but this approach could be an option for both Linux and Mac sites.
Would anyone care to comment about the feasibility of Samba4 being ported to the ReadyNAS and making the AD feature available? Or on a related topic implementing OpenLDAP on the ReadyNAS?

- chirpaLuminaryIts a good idea, but I dont know if much progress would be made on it from NTGR. You'd probably have more luck from a community add-on for it. LDAP has long been on the wish list, no progress made.
