Serial Number - How Many Characters

I have a ReadyNAS NV+ RND4000. The serial number is 000D-A201-7E13. This amounts to 12 characters. I have at least three documents from Netgear confirming this serial number. It is also written on the back of the device. Why is it that both phone in help and log in help, insist that the Serial Number must be 13 digits? After about 10 minutes of discussion the 12 digital serial number is usually accepted.

That serial number is the MAC address of the first NIC in the NAS. On some old systems the MAC address was the serial (pre-NetGear acquisition in 2007 and maybe a little while afterwards, I think). New systems have a NetGear 13-digit serial which is very different to a NIC's MAC address.
