Shortage of WD Hard Drives

Question

Dear Forum Members&nbsp;I don't know what it's like in the US but here in the UK, and by extension the EU as well, there seem to be a shortage of WD hard drives. In my own particular case I've found that my order for 2 x 4TB WD Red Plus HDs cannot be fulfilled until after 18th January, when Western Digital themselves have been resupplied.&nbsp;Also, last year I had ordered 2 x 2TB WD Blue HD but found one was faulty, this was sent back to Western Digital in November for replacement. However, I've just been informed that I cannot get a replacement Blue HD until they have replenished their own stocks, unfortunately they do not know when their new HDs will arrive.&nbsp;I can only imagine that current world events have combined to somehow cause this shortage of HDs, i.e. staff shortages caused by covid, War in Ukraine disrupting shipping schedules and supplies, etc.&nbsp;Guess I'll have to wait until things resolve themselves.&nbsp;UK Bob&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

I wonder if has anything to do with the disk size. The smaller capacity disks aren't in as much demand anymore, so they probably make far fewer of them. It may be time to get those 12TB disks that you always wanted, and upgrade! 😄

You know Laserbait, &nbsp;I'm inclined to disagree with your statement "The smaller capacity disks aren't in as much demand anymore" simply because as the prices for sub-6TB disks fall the more uses they will be put to, i.e devices other than computers that require storage space.&nbsp;Plus, the SOHO market is also likely to snap up low cost high quality HDs, so I believe, but can't prove, that it's just that supply momentarily cannot keep up with demand.&nbsp;Besides, 12TB HDs are aimed at the professional market, with corresponding professional-type prices, and as such unlikely to be affordable for the SOHO marketplace.&nbsp;Still, I could be wrong in my assumptions and therefore open to a convincing argument.&nbsp;UK Bob&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Hey Bob,&nbsp;You could be right.&nbsp; I was basing that on my recent research for a new desktop PC.&nbsp;&nbsp; None of the ones that I was looking at had HDD's, only SSD or NVMe as their main storage, even most of the cheaper models. I really think that Solid State storage has eroded the small HDD market. And Solid State really shines when it comes to space and power savings, thermals and overall performance.&nbsp;I also work for a Enterprise storage company, and we have pretty much gotten away from HDD's completely, except for the customers that need really big capacity.&nbsp; The smallest HDD that we're offering is 8TB, going out to 16TB models, with 20's being offered soon.&nbsp;Granted, these are Enterprise class, but they're still just SATA, not SAS.&nbsp;&nbsp;Anywhoo, to answer your original question, Amazon in the US has the 4TB Red Plus drives in stock right now for ~$70 USD, and Microcenter.com has them in stock for ~$85 USD.&nbsp;&nbsp;I hope you get your drives soon, the waiting sucks! 🙂
