No ReadyNAS uses proprietary RAID. The filesystem used is not proprietary. Data recovery is possible using a PC especially one running Linux. What is proprietary is the expansion scripts used to automatically expand volumes.
For the Ultra 2, in a Linux PC, You would use mdadm to start the RAID, scan for volumes and then mount them. If you don't have the necessary packages installed they could easily be installed using apt-get.
Having said that most users would consider moving arrays from one ReadyNAS to another on the same platform to be easier. Also remember the ReadyNAS Ultra Series has a 3 year warranty.
