UPS recommendations for RN31600 and a server with iSCSI?

HI All,

I'm looking to purchase a RN31600 and I plan to either connect to it with an iSCSI LUN in Win Server 2012 or with VMWare ESXi.

Ideally, I'd like to put both of them on the same UPS. The site has a backup generator so it's rare that the ReadyNAS and Server would need to automatically shut down. However, if there is any issues with the generator, I'd like to have a reliable way to shut down both the Server and NAS. Does anyone have any recommendations for a UPS that would allow for gracefully shutting down both devices and allow for the iSCSI connection to be disconnected before the NAS goes down?

I'm assuming something networked, but if we can save costs with a USB solution that's great.

We have another VMWare ESXi server and a ReadyNAS Pro on two separate CyberPower UPSes and I've set the shutdown schedules to get the Server to shut down before the ReadyNAS attempts to do so. It's not perfect, so if I can have a more reliable setup this time around, I'd like to consider it.

Thanks!

I think the tricky part here is dropping the iSCSI connection before the NAS shutdown.

I guess you could set up the server to shut down at a higher threshold, so it shuts down first. But that might not be bulletproof.

A crude (but more expensive) approach might be to daisy-chain two UPS (connecting UPS B to a protected output on UPS A).  Then have the server monitor UPS A, and the NAS monitor UPS B. "B" can be smaller than "A", since its only purpose is to give the NAS a bit more running time.

Daisy chaining them is typically frowned upon, from what I've read. I suppose waiting for UPS A to die off before UPS B goes into power protection and shuts down the NAS would work because it will ensure that the server is off (hopefully from the shutdown command) before the NAS initiates the shutdown on B.

I know it's easier said than done, but I was hoping there would be something where the server broadcast "I'm shutting down" and the NAS would monitor for the iSCSI to disconnect and then shut down itself. I'm aware that I am overthinking it when there is a generator on site, but I'd just like to eliminate as many chances for corruption as possible.
