USB diagnosis for strange behavior
Hello,
I got a bunch of UPS errors such as the following recently:
Wed Feb 8 17:32:08 EST 2012 UPS has been disconnected.
I've logged into the management card of the UPS (ap9630 installed in an APC 1500 Smart UPS) and it shows everything is working fine. Unfortunately, now the ReadyNAS NV+ refuses to recognize there is a UPS attached to either of its USB ports. I have verified the USB cable is working by connecting it to my Mac and moving files. I've even tried another known-good cable on the ReadyNAS NV+ but it also failed. I've connected a USB thumb drive to both ports of the ReadyNAS NV+ and each time it recognized the drive and automatically copied the files to itself (as it is configured to do). Please note I have rebooted both the ReadyNAS NV+ and the UPS (and its management card) several times through out this process, yet with no difference in results.
So with all of that said, is there someway in which the USB ports could be working for data, but still not recognize the USB? Is there some sensor (hardware) or a daemon (software) that could be causing these results?
Thanks.

- PapaBear1ApprenticeCourtier - the NAS will not recognize all UPS devices. That being said, most of the APC devices are. However, you have installed an ap9630 network remote management adapter. I would removed the card and see if your cable will work properly with the NV+ when plugged into the RJ45 port near the top of the SMT1500 labeled UPS monitoring port.
Granted, I have a consumer grade APC Backups NS1250 (BN1250LCD), but all I had to do was plug the supplied cable with RJ45 at one end and USB A connector at the other end into the RJ45 slot on the UPS and one USB port on my NVX and go through the setup on the NVX. As a test, I pulled the USB end out of my NVX and inserted it into one USB port of my NV+. The NV+ now shows in RAIDar a green dot on the NV+ line under the UPS Battery Icon, and in Frontview states that "This device is physically monitoring a UPS". The default shutdown selection is "auto".
The network managment card may be designed to work with a special application as the device comes with a CD as well as a manual. From perusing the manual on line, it appears that the card does what the ReadyNAS is already configured to do, ie: monitory the UPS and when the battery reaches a certain level, shut down the NAS. However, it appears that the card is designed to be used with a computer or full server, not an NAS. If the above works, hopefully you can return the card as it appears to be a heafty investment.
