USB hard disk removal

Hi

With the old Pro series of NAS devices, if the "USB and backup status LED" above the backup button was not lit, it was safe to remove the USB disk.
Now with OS6 (if the USB disk is removed without logging into the web page and clicking unmount) the next time the USB disk is inserted it is marked as read-only. A reboot of the ReadyNAS doesn't reset the way that the ReadyNAS sees the USB disk.
This is causing me problems with a simple offsite backup solution for my clients new ReadyNAS.
Also helpful would be a way in the web UI to eject and then reconnect the USB disk in a read/write state.

Please fix this so that the old behavior in the previous OS versions is restored, if not enhanced.

Until then I have a problem with existing clients on new ReadyNAS units and for the time being will need to find a competing product for new clients that would like a simple offsite backup solution.

Note: The NAS backup feature of ejecting the disk after the backup job has been run is not helpful in our situation, because we are using a server side script to backup to the USB disk the contents of a iSCSI LUN.

Best regards

  • Have you figured out how to make the drive writable? My system crashed during a backup so now it insists that the USB drive is read-only no matter what I try...
  • Did you try connecting the USB drive to a PC? If Windows wants to scan/repair, let it.
  • Got it all cleaned up, now I get an error attaching the device: System: External storage device 'Seagate ST3000DM003-1F216N' connected, but could not find a known filesystem on it.

I tried re-partitioning and reformatting with no luck. Rebooted and it didn't even see the drive. Reconnected drive to windows and it is clean as a whistle.
