vertical expansion - of the wrong nas?

Your new drives are 7200 rpm, which I think is a bigger factor than the size as far as temps go.
In any event, temps are directly linked to power - since all the power used eventually turns into heat. Your WD40EFRX drives were speced to use 4.5W when doing read/writes, and 3.4W when idle. The WD80EFBX is spec'd at 8.8W when doing read/writes, and 5.3W when idle. So I would expect the 8 TB model to have higher temps.

I guess that, this being the 2nd 8TB disk fitted to the NAS, the Volume has increased its capacity to 14.54 TB and the NAS needs to “splice” the data evenly across the 4 disks..? Would that be the case?
Which may mean that the next two “swap 4TB for a 8TB” jobs may also require two resynch each…
Meanwhile I fitted the two 4TB disks (removed from this NAS), to a PC and currently full erasing one of them with DLGDIAG. Once finished (estimated ~23:30 UK time) I may power up NAS A (which should be in a Degraded state, as the failing disk was removed), and backup all its data on a free 8TB before hot-inserting the 4TB which I am currently erasing.

Yes, that's what we told you to expect. After the first larger drive, each drive will require two syncs. One for the original 4TB layer, and another for the second. BTRFS is what links them together into one file system. The first replacement didn't require a second sync because there was no mate for the additrional 4TB -- it was wasted till you added a second.

Your original data volume had only one RAID group. Each drive had a small partition for the OS, a small partition for swap, and a ~4TB partition for data. These 4 partitions held the RAID-5 group. With XRAID, this is md127.
When you vertically expand, a new partition is created on each the larger disks (to fill up the extra space). A second RAID group is created using those partitions. With XRAID, it will start off as RAID-1, but it will be converted to RAID-5 when you upgrade the third disk. If this is the first vertical expansion, this will be md126.
md127+md126 are then concatenated together to form a single data volume.
So every re-sync of the data volume from now on will require two steps (because both RAID groups need to be resynced).
