Volume Degraded - No indication 526x
Upon powering up this morning my 526X had a "Volume is degraded " alert. Yet all disks are showing OK, their is no other alert indicating why this volume degraded alert in on. I did a restart, the alert came backon, then I did a balnce just to see reading the volume would give me any othere alerts indicating what the problem is. The balance completed fine, I didn't do a scrub as it would take forever.

Hi mdirvin,
One of the disks might have failed. You will get that status on your volume when there is no redundancy on the volume. You can download the NAS system logs then check the disk_info.log and check the disks for errors.

I have been playing around with it. The NAS is used for DR backups. I have other backups so I not in a panic. The way I got to 4 - 6TB drives and 2 - 4TB drives is by replacing and expanding. Now that I've done that I would chose a different path next time. It was very time consuming. Since my post I switched from X-Raid to Flex-Raid. When I did that I got some more infor. I had two Groups?? Not sure what that means but its probably not good. Here is a link to the screen shot:

I couldn't switch back to X-raid since I had expanded volumes. At that point I decded I probably screwed something up going throug all the disk expansions. I then did a factory reset, it came up as a raid 5 in X-raid. I then recreated my backup, and now everything seems to be OK. The data is all copied back, and is resyncing now. I don't belive in coincidences, and since it happened the night after I finished expanding the raid unit during the first power down and restart. (The unit is scheduled to power down a 11pm and restart at 8am.) I'm sure there was a glitch in the expansion. Thanks for the offer to help, I'll keep an eye on this, but its probably OK now.

Expansion puts quite a strain on the drives. I think it is equally or more likely that you have a drive that is close to failure. You should take a look at the SMART info for each of your drives and see if anything stands out.
