what version of SMB is my 312 using?
hi guys. Pulled the trigger on the ds1618+ during black friday. I plan on using my netgear 312 as a backup nas. Does anyone know what version smb this netgear 312 is using? My Dune player cannot...

Sorry, I should have clarified. Right now my dune can access the shares on my netgear312. The dune can only access my synology share via smb1.
I would like to conform to the deprecation of smb1, stephen, what do you mean all are enabled? Is it possible to know which one it uses at a given time? Are you not concerned with malware vulnerability using smb1?
Sorry missed the thread re the smb plus app. Will give that a go too.

ok, I installed smb plus and checked every level. The Dune player will only access the share when I set the minimum level to smb1. Any higher and it won't connect. I will set the same on the ds1618+. It is what it is I guess.
Thanks for your help guys. I'm gonna miss this forum. A lot of great help on here. Way better than the Synology forums IMO. I was looking for a deal on a bigger netgear units but stock is non existeant on Amazon/Newegg. Couldn't pass up the ds1618+.

Blanker-2, once you have successfully installed the smb plus app you need to launch it for configuration.
This is done via admin page/apps/installed apps
Once smb plus is launched go the third tab from the left. In German it is called "Schreiboptionen". In English it should read something like "writing options". Activate "Vorbelegen", which should read something like "pre-allocation" in English.

FWIW, the Dune player will also work with NFS, though that is also insecure. Personally I just leave smb1 enabled for my media players. I think the security risk of smb1 (or nfs) is managable on a home network - in most cases people on home networks have saved the log in credentials on the PCs anyway, so malware on any PC can reach the NAS even with SMB 3.
Though I do recommend that people consider the threat of ransomware when they set up their backup plan.

I'm thinking of enabling snapshots for personal files on the ds1618 (600GB). Then have it back up to the netgear nas and sync up all data for a 1:1 copy once a week perhaps. I have an external hdd for personal file backups (movies are just too big) near my main pc. And also a mediasonic probox with a full 1:1 offsite backup at work. I usually sync that up once a year.- StephenBDec 04, 2018Guru - Experienced User
If the ReadyNAS will be only used for backing up the Synology, then I suggest disabling SMB on the ReadyNAS altogether (only enabling rsync, and using that for backup). That would effectively isolate the ReadyNAS from any PC malware infections. The Synology->Readynas backups would be the only path to it, and you are in control of the schedule for those backups. My backup ReadyNAS also have snapshots enabled (using custom snapshots to manage retention).
I'd suggest running the ReadyNAS backup job(s) daily - since they are incremental, they won't take much time.
