X-Raid compatibility
Currently this is a hypothetical situation, but..........
I currently have a Duo RND 2000 with two 1TB Samsung drives working in X-Raid. If the Duo were to fail, and i were to relpace it with, say, a ReadyNAS Duo Ultra RNDU2000 which also has X-Raid, would i simply be able to transfer the discs and expect them to retain the data?

- All of the Ultra series as well as the Pro series and the now discontinued NVX have X-Raid2, not X-Raid. The difference is that basically the newer series run on an Intel CPU and the Duo/NV+ and the previous sparc based series run of an Infrant Technologies CPU and the two are not compatible.
You have two choices, maintain a current and complete backup of all your data on an external drive, preferably in a FAT32 format, or go ahead and get the the Ultra 2, install two drives in it and use the Duo as a back up target via rsync. It is a perfectly good device in that role, and you will benefit from the additional speed and flexibility of the Ultra 2 now.
If you choose to get the Ultra 2 now, you can set it up, create a backup job (NFS Server option) on it to pull all the data off the Duo, and convert the backup job to rsysnc server and run again. After that, if you are using the Ultra 2 as your primary, reverse the backup job using rsync with the Ultra as the source and the Duo as the target. It is the best and fastest way to do a backup. - Thanks for the very clear response.
