XRAID-2 Hot Spare or Expansion with FlexRaid

I've seen a few messages a year old regarding hot spare support on X-RAID. I would really like to see hot spare support on the ReadyNAS pro with XRAID2. I know there is auto expansion to consider but perhaps you could leave the drive out during setup and designate a bay as the hot spare bay, which then wouldn't be autoexpanded.

I realize that FlexRaid has hot spare capability, but FlexRaid (at least to my knowledge) requires deleting the volume and recreating it if you want to perform an expansion.

Either allowing drive additions in FlexRaid without volume recreation or allow hot spare designation in XRAID-2 would be helpful.

  • Hi

Is there any intension to provide RAID 6 to the NVX? I currently use a NV+, which is great, but I really wish to use a 4-drive RAID 6 system and it would seem that the only Netgear solution would be to go for the ReadyNAS Pro (which is seriously expensive and I just don't need the additional facilities in the Pro). As an alternative, I could buy a Qnap which supports RAID 6 for only £300 (TS-410). It would seem to me that Netgear should at least consider RAID 6 for the NVX in order to keep it in line with the competition; does anyone else have any thoughts on this being an oversight for the NVX?

Business x86 ReadyNas (not Pioneer) can have disk scrubbing scheduled.

I doubt it. It'd be nice, but on a 4-bay ReadyNas NetGear probably reckons X-RAID2 single-redundancy or RAID-5 is adequate.

Perhaps. I guess it is something they could consider, but they probably already have considered it. Considering the NVX has been out quite a while now, I doubt it'll get RAID-6 or X-RAID2 dual-redundancy support as it hasn't already.

There is also the 3200 and 4200 but they are noisier and more expensive. The Pro does have two extra drive bays (useful for expansion) is faster (has faster CPU), and has an extra memory slot. It is worth considering imo.
  • Yes, I have been thinking about the Pro, but it has quite a hefty price tag! I guess my question to Netgear is why not provide 4-disk RAID 6 on the NVX; even if not that many folks used it, it would seem a logical option to include (if nothing else, just to make the sales documentation look better). Looking at the competition makes me think that Netgear maybe should have considered a 5 bay RAID 6 device as the logical upgrade from the NV+ (i.e. they ought to have brought out something to compete with the Qnap 509). I don't intend migrating from my ReadyNAS's, but the 509's price makes it difficult to ignore as an alternative strategy.

  • I would also like to see RAID 6 support on the NVX Business Edition. I am currently using 4 Hard Disks in Flex-RAID mode with RAID5 + 1 Hotspare Drive at 5 customers sites (growing). RAID 6 dual-redundancy mode in enhanced X-RAID 2 would be a much better option!

Hopefully Netgear will implement this, even if they think that X-RAID 2 is sufficient for the NVX. It would also make a good difference factor to the NVX Pioneer Edition (if they left it out there)
