factory reset can't select xraid-2

I've installed OS6 on a new readynas pro6 and when I run a factory reset I am not given the option to select XRaid, XRaid-2 or 'normal' Raid in RAIDar, it just selects XRaid by default.

After it creates the volume the 'format' option is not available.

How can I switch or rebuild, forcing xraid-2?

  • No. X-RAID or X-RAID2 doesn't mean the level of redundancy. It's just a name. It used to be called X-RAID, then X-RAID2 and now X-RAID again (depending on where you look).

The rules I know from 6.5.0 (may have slightly changed since):

    • Volume creation:

If your ReadyNAS has more than six bays and you insert six or more HDDs, then X-RAID will create a RAID6.

In any other situation, X-RAID will not create a RAID6 array.

    • Horizontal expansion:

If you add a seventh HDD, X-RAID will reshape to a RAID6.

    More details here: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Using-your-ReadyNAS/XRAID-turned-RAID5-into-RAID6-when-adding-a-drive/m-p/1120084#M113353

If you want to create a RAID6 array:

    1. Disable X-RAID from the GUI.
    2. Destroy the volume (/!\ wipes all data from it /!\).
    3. Select all the HDDs you want.
    4. Create a new volume using RAID6.
    5. You can re-enable X-RAID afterwards that if you want.

You might want to read the software manual.  http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/READYNAS-100/READYNAS_OS_6_SM_EN.pdf

No ReadyNAS supports both xraid and xraid2.  The original sparc ReadyNAS (NV+, duo, 1100, etc) supported xraid.  All x86 and ARM ReadyNAS (OS 4.2, OS 5, OS 6) only support xraid2. Over time, Netgear just called it xraid.

That said, some people wrongly think XRAID2 means dual redundancy (protection against two disk failures).  Is that what you want to achieve?

If the XRAID button on the volume page has a green stripe on it, then xraid is on.  If you click on the XRAID control it is turned off.  This is non-destructive and reversible.

If you need to rebuild with a new RAID mode, you then destroy the volume (clicking on the settings wheel on the volume page).  You can do this even if the volume is not fully synced.  Then create a new volume (selecting the disks you want in it, choosing the raid mode, etc).

My goal is to be able to sustain a double disk failure.  Is that not possible?

It is possible, but is not called xraid2.  Are all your disks the same size?

The process is to switch to flexraid, destroy the volume, and create a new RAID-6 volume.  You can then switch back to xraid if you like.
