RND2000-V2 cannot reset to select factory default
i have two RND2000-v2 that both are causing the same problem.
Let me first say that i do not have the current password so i have to do a boot and default to factory settings.
If i power up, with a good windows formatted disk in i get the flashing lights showing "bad boot Sector" i can power down normally.
if i power up with no disks in i get the flashing lights showing no disk. i can power down normally.
if i hold reset when powering up it seems to start up, the boot menu never appears, but after some time the power button continues to flash, and the activity led flashes, it will do this for hours. the boot menu never appears. what's more, i cannot power down using the power button.
I can see the ip address assigned to the readynas, but i cannot access the front page, Raidar cannot see the Readynas either.
whats worse its the same with two identical units.
i can only conclude that i am doing something wrong as i just cannot get to the boot menu, any help would be appreciated, i just want to default to factory settings.
HELP!!!
thanks for this i will work my way through it and report back.

Does the front panel say ReadyNAS Duo ? Or does it instead say ReadyNAS Duo v2 ?
The other labels are confusing, the front panel is the easiest way to tell exactly what you have.

Actually it can be reset w/o losing data by doing an OS Reinstall. But your second step might have eliminated that possibility (sinc powering up while holding down the reset will start a factory default after about 25 seconds).
But we can give you more data once we are certain on the model details.

Thanks for the reply. The front panel says readynas duo. but underneath there is a label that says readynas duo RND2000 V2.

Netgear really messed up the branding. As a result, a lot of Duo v1 owners think they have have a v2. You have the hardware version 2 of the original Duo (called a v1 here and on the Netgear support pages).
Instructions for the boot menu are on pages 15-16 here:
You should review them, especially if you were using the instructions for the v2.
Also, the disk size has to be 2 TB or less - your NAS do not support GPT formatting. Larger disks might appear to work, but the volume size will be small (less than 2 TB). Almost all desktop-class drives in this size range use SMR technology - which isn't a good fit for ReadyNAS. So if you do get new disks, you should use a NAS-purposed drive. Seagate Ironwolf and WD Red Plus are both good options.

I'd start by testing the disks in the two NAS. Best to connect them to a Windows PC (either with SATA or a USB adapter/dock) and use vendor tools. WD Disk Utilities for Western Digital, Seatools for Seagate.
If you want to use FlexRAID, then you'll need to install the old version of RAIDar (4.3.8)
Getting a compatible Java can be problematic - this package will work:
If you just want XRAID, then you can use the "new" 6.5 software.
If the disks are healthy, you can unformat them in the PC. One way is to do that is to run the destructive write-zeros test in the vendor tools. Another is to use the disk utility to delete the partitions (click on each, and then "delete volume"). Then when you power up the NAS with the disks installed, they will automatically do a factory install.
When was the last time you successfully accessed frontview? Your NAS doesn't support TLS 1.2, so you will get an SSL/Cipher Mismatch error from most browsers. If you run into that, you can use FireFox and set security.tls.version.min to 1 (browse to about:config and search for the setting).

Stephen, you are absolutely spot on, i worked as if they are duo v1 and all went well. the firefox access worked as well.
i am so grateful for your help.
one thing i discovered was that the ip address and all programmed parameters follow the disk volume across machines. i think that also confused things when i was trying to debug the situation.
again many thanks

The IP address follows only if you've set a fixed IP in the NAS. That's usually not the best way to go. Reserving an IP in the router is usually preferred. That way, if you switch routers and the new one doesn't use the same subnet as the old, you don't lose access to the NAS.
