Does the front panel say ReadyNAS Duo ? Or does it instead say ReadyNAS Duo v2 ?
The other labels are confusing, the front panel is the easiest way to tell exactly what you have.

Actually it can be reset w/o losing data by doing an OS Reinstall. But your second step might have eliminated that possibility (sinc powering up while holding down the reset will start a factory default after about 25 seconds).
But we can give you more data once we are certain on the model details.
