Triple checked the instructions. Fresh installs on two other clients - Vista and Windows 7 - get the same result; ReadyNas shares folder is empty.
I notice that the ReleaseNotes installed with the ReadyNas client - a short document with two lines dating from 2009 - itemise a change as "reducing the number of can't see folders errors". Seems like it didn't reduce it that much.
I'm going to try de-installing and re-installing the add-on. Can't think of anything else.
