Dropbox ?
Dropbox is a very handy service for keeping files in sync across multiple computers and it support Windows, Mac, and Linux. I have only tested in Windows so far, but I use Linux as well and might use Mac eventually as well; I would really like to have a share on my Readynas that automatically stays in sync with a folder on all my computers.
Does anyone know if Dropbox can be installed on the Readynas, and if an addon might be possible, if not does anyone know of another free service that can be installed on the Readynas?

- JohnnyEgnyteAspirantYou're right, the Dropbox public folder does have file link sharing capabilities. My point was that it's very limited (access, security, granularity). I won't go into details since Dropbox and Egnyte serve completely different markets. Dropbox is more for consumer and Egnyte is more for business. Not saying there's no crossover, but both are great services in their respective spaces :)
I'll definitely bring up the pricing structure concerns at our next staff meeting. You bring up a very interesting point, because usually for small-medium businesses, we are replacing their traditional file servers with Egnyte + ReadyNAS so we save them a ton of money. But for individual use, the cost might not be so justified.
Thanks again for the great input guys, since Egnyte works so closely with NETGEAR, we really value the opinion of the NETGEAR community :)
Cheers!
~ Johnny - sphardy1ApprenticeFYI the link I gave was not to a dropbox public folder - so if you are thinking of competing with Dropbox, please be sure you do fully understand what you are up against now vs what you may have experienced in the past.
- THEPAspirantI think he meant the link came from a public folder. I use dropbox at school and egnyte olc at work. I agree with johnnyegnyte, they are used in different scenarios... correct me if I'm wrong but they aren't direct competitors. Hard to explain, have to just try both services to understand what each does well.

Maybe - but that would still be incorrect. To be clear - any file in Dropbox can be shared via a HTML link. There is no requirement for special folders, public or otherwise, and so contradicts the key advantage being claimed for Egnytecorrect me if I'm wrong but they aren't direct competitors.
In this thread, Johnny has positioned Egnyte directly against Dropbox. Consider:
This thread is about people wanting to install Dropbox on their NAS - possible to do but there is no addon due to significant difficulties involved in creating one.
The suggestion by Johnny to use Egnyte is a good one as they have the local cloud feature which could satisfy the NAS installation requirement, and from a real cloud sharing perspective there are a lot of similarities between Dropbox & Egnyte (I would also agree they do differ also - but not as much as suggested as Johnny's info is out of date)
But - Egnyte charges a significant premium for the local cloud feature making it far too expensive for home users
The suggestion is then to use Egnyte without the local cloud feature ie without NAS support, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of this thread while at the same time positioning Egnyte squarely against Dropbox as it is not offering any thing very different than what commenters on this thread, requesting Dropbox support, already have
And so I refer you back to this comment which I feel remains completely valid: viewtopic.php?f=61&t=26792&p=318529#p318341 - JohnnyEgnyteAspirantsphardy, your assessment is correct.
Egnyte primarily serves the small-medium business market, thus our price point is relatively high for single home users. We focus on business-centric features of a cloud file server (security, accessibility, file sharing, bi-directional synchronization) integrated with the ReadyNAS at a premium, which might not be crucial or affordable to home users.
My intention for posting on this thread was suggesting an alternative to Dropbox on the ReadyNAS, we do not directly compete with them, we are in separate markets as mentioned in my earlier post. It was simply a suggestion, not an attack on Dropbox, which is an excellent personal cloud service.
I apologize for derailing this thread , back to Dropbox development request!
~ Johnny - matgrAspirantWould still like this as a package as I cant get the bloody thing to come on at startup.
Egnyte does look cool but for home use its to many $$'s - HowieG1Aspirant

So is an add-on for Dropbox proving too difficult? I too would really appreciate a simple reliable installation package.
..oh and I'm happy to donate too! - sphardy1Apprentice

In short - yes... The key difficulty is linking the installation to the appropriate dropbox account which requires user intervention and that complicates any addon immensely - the_evaluatorAspirantif anyone has done this manually, even a detailed walk through of the install and config would be immensely helpful. the recent crashplan install walk through was a big hit, and greatly appreciated by everyone.
- sphardy1ApprenticeThere is an explanation on the official dropbox wiki that I know works fine for ReadyNAS:

If you have basic Linux skills then the installation is fairly straight forward. Where referenced, follow the debian instructions
