iOS and airprint
Hi all,
Anybody dare try to compile an add-on to enable AirPrint to printers connected to a readynas duo? Apparently it has been done fairly simple on a ubuntu box (http://www.micromux.com/2010/11/22/airp ... -on-linux/), but I have accepted that I do not have the skills so I was hoping that the intress was sufficient for somebody willing to write an add-on...

- mtjoernelundAspirantOk, have been doing some digging into this. I can fairly easily get the printer to show up when browsing for printers on my iOS devices, that only takes addition of two lines in the printers Bonjour service-file in /etc/avahi/services/
However when I send a print job from an iOS device to the printer attached to the ReadyNAS nothing happens - no error and no print. It seems the problem is that the iOS device sends the print job as a pdf-file to the printer, and that the cups version on the ReadyNAS has no pdf-filter included. I can get the package cups-pdf via apt-get, but that will at the same time update the cups version, and I do not think that a newer cups-version is compatible with Frontview.
So does anybody know a way to get a pdf-filter included in the cups-version on the ReadyNAS? - WinfriedGAspirantThis would be really great to print with the iPAD over the NAS - up to now for me printing over the iPAd works only when i attached the printer directly to the router and the method described here http://www.lisanet.de/?p=71. I didn´t see the Printer attached to the NAS (Bonjour is activated and works as I see the printer with Bonjour for Windows ...) So how do you manage to see the printer?
- mtjoernelundAspirantAs mentioned above you need to add a little to the Bonjour broadcast of your printer. You do this by going to the folder /etc/avahi/services/ and find the service file for your printer. For me it was named PRINTER-Q8330B.service. Open this file in an editor. and add the following:
- Under the type-class add the following: <subtype>_universal._sub._ipp._tcp</subtype>
- As the last of the txt-recording add the following: <txt-record>URF=none</txt-record>
(URF can apparently be set to whatever without making any difference as long as it is not empty, so it seems this is a call that is reserved for later use.
- Finally in the txt-recording with the call to "pdl" you probably need to include at least "application/pdf" to possible formats
Adding all of this will make the printer show up on your iPad, however I am far from certain that your printer will work. As far as I can gather the printer either needs to be able to accept and interpret pdf-files. Otherwise CUPS needs to be able to interpret the pdf file for the printer, which is why I am looking for a way to get a pdf-filter installed.
Please note that you need to have ssh enabled to do this. - mtjoernelundAspirant* bump*
Nobody that can help with a pdf-filter on a Duo? - super_poussinVirtuosoit will require to install cups-pdf which is not simple even on x86 :(
best way will be to ask jedi's to add pdf support to cups in next firmware version, then doing an addon for airprint will be easy :) - uwew333AspirantI too would love to be able to print from my iPad/iPhone -- so I jump on this bandwagon and hope the "Jeddi" will hear our request and add PDF support to cubs...But I reader this for the sparc platform (ReadyNAS +)
Many thanks in advance, - soremaniacAspirantthis would be just a killer feauture on the readyNas.....
please add AirPrint to the Firmware
thx - chirpaLuminaryMaybe in the next x86 release (after 4.2.16).
- soremaniacAspirantAnd add cloud print or Email print too;-)
- wr18962AspirantHas anyone made any progress on this ?
I was able to make the changes suggested by mtjoernelund and see the printer from my iPad but no output from the printer. No error messages as far as I could tell to indicate what was going wrong.
