I believe the lock you are seeing means the volume is encrypted. Is the USB device you connected actually the encryption key, or is it something else? Did you try rebooting the NAS with the encryption key in place?
The inactive volumes message might be a side effect of not using the correct key - not sure, as I don't use disk encryption on my ReadyNAS. It also could mean something has gone wrong with the volume (for instance RAID out of sync). Either way, USB recovery won't solve this issue. You could try Netgear paid support.
