I have been happily running 6.9.0 for a week or so and no problems there. It appears that the problem was with an incorrect version of iDrive for my NAS.
iDrive has recommended their Linux scripts:

Linux(CentOS/Ubuntu/Fedora) - 32-bit/64-bit
Perl v5.8 or later
It seems the NAS Linux is Debian V8 (Jessie). Does anyone know if these iDrive scripts will work with Debian?
