ReadyNAS Duo v2 network speed

Hello, I have never accessed the community before although I am a longtime ReadyNAS Duo v1 user. The NAS has been a very reliable servant for me, acting as file storage for my home business and also a media server accessed by an NTV550 HD media player. With the capacity well on its way to being maxed out even after setting the Raid to total 4Tb I gave some thought to increasing my capacity.

Found a second hand Duo v2 locally so thought that would solve my storage problem as I would be able to X-raid2 as well as being a higher performing unit that would be used for bluray .iso files due to it's larger capacity HDD maximum. Being familiar and comfortable with the ReadyNAS environment I was happy with this solution.

Installed 2xWD Red Plus 4Tb drives and split the data between the two NAS to maximize my capacity which worked out perfectly....so far so good!

Problem now is that the role for the v2 is acting as the HD Media server believing that it would outperform the v1 (which always worked beautifully) BUT even though the v1 has played back bluray .iso files with no problem for many years the v2 cannot, stuttering like crazy as soon as playing of the file begins. The bluray .iso files on the v1 still work perfectly. Using the Network Speed Test on the NTV550 showed that the speed for the v1 share is 70+Mb/s while the speed for the v2 share is 10Mb/s so I assume the problem is with the network speed of the v2. How can this be, as the default settings for the v1 worked perfectly straight out of the box?

After hours of reading many entries on this forum I couldn't find anything that related directly to my problem so I thought I might post something and see if anyone can give me some advice.

Both NAS are plugged into the same Netgear 8 port gigabit switch and Cat-5E cable runs directly from that switch to the NTV550. I have stuck with the default CIFA/SMB protocols as these are the defaults with the NTV550.

Thanks in advance.

I suspect an issue with the ethernet in the v2.

Look on at the LED on the ethernet port.  Is it green?  Or is it amber?

Is the v2 connected to the same switch (or router) as the original Duo?

Try another cable.  If that doesn't help, try another port on your router/switch.  If it is on a switch (especially a "green" one), then try connecting directly to your router.  Or vice-versa.

Thanks for your quick responses and I should have expanded my trouble shooting a little futher. Yes, both the v1 and v2 are into the same switch and both show green so the gigabit is all good. I have already tried a cable swap as well as a different port in the switch with no change - I've been working on it for a couple of days! Fiddled around with trying to get the NTV550 to use NFS after making the v2 share only have that service but couldn't get it to scan anything that way, so back to trying to get SMB up to speed. If you have any advice regarding NFS, or can point me in the direction of a step by step guide to making NFS work, I could try that from the NTV. Thanks again.

  • Try uncheck Jumbo Frames checkbox in Ethernet settings of your v2.

Thanks for joining the discussion, RayDee. StephenB may confirm or deny, but I don't believe the Readynas Duo v2 has the ability to change the JumboFrames setting from the Web interface unlike the v1. From what I have read you have to get into the codes to alter it. It doesn't allow alteration of the MTU either which is something else I have researched. Thanks again!

The DuoV2 was clearly designed for a less sophisticated home user, so does not have those settings.

I'm actually wondering if the problem isn't that the drives are only operating at SATA1 speed, which may be related to the odd start-up issue you're seeing.  Maybe try plugging in a USB3 device and test speed to it.

FYI, I just fired up my DuoV2 and I get an average read speed of 65.5MB/sec on a 400MB file.  That's about half of what a Pro2 gives me, but should be plenty fast enough for streaming HD content.

  • I did a factory reset ultimate night time to resolve per others have recommended on the reddit thread. It's adequate thus far however it's only been 8 hours for home products like vacuum. Will report again if I come across the issue again.
