Readynas Ultra 6 Network issues??

Hi,

Monday morning I could not access fileshares on my Ultra 6. When I looked into the active client list on my router,  its 2 permanent network connections were missing in the list. I had a look at the machine. It was on and the two RJ45 ports seemed to be busy. When I shorlty pressed the on/off button to bring up the info display, nothing happened. So I decided to reboot it. The machine started a sync job (took 7 hours). After that, all seemed to be fine.

This morning I had the same problems and decided to reboot it again. It did not start the sync process. All seems to be fine.

I had a look at the logs and there is no info on the loose of a connection. According to the logs, the Ultra 6 has been running without problems.

I also have a Readynas 426. Both the Ultra 6 and the 426 are connected to the router via a managed switch (Netgear GC510P). The switch is still in its default settings.

What could be wrong here? I bought the Ultra 6 in August 2011. The Ultra 6 and 426 are both on firmware 6.10.9.

The data on the 426 is less important to me. If necesary I could try a HD switch. Put all drives from the Ultra 6 in the 426 and vice versa.

Thanks,Jan

  • The NAS devices are connected to a smart ups.

The switch is managed , not smart.

However I could monitor the trafic (i think).

At the moment the problem NAS is still running and surprisingly fast.

  • What bonding mode are you using for the two ethernet ports?

Did you try power-cycling the switch?

There is no bonding AFIK. Just 2 IP adresses.

Next time I will try power cycling the switch.

If I switch the drives, will it work out of the box?

Not ideal unless you are connecting the NAS to two different networks.  I suggest removing one of the ethernet cables while you are troubleshooting this.

Do you have ssh enabled on both NAS?

Yes.  Make sure both NAS are powered down when you do the switch.  Also, I recommend labeling the drives as you removed them (Both slot number and the original NAS).

The configuration is all stored on the drives, and the NAS boots from the drives.  Obviously there are differences between the platforms, but the systems should apply the relevant changes when they first boot.
