ReadyNAS Pro 6 Business Edition RNDP6000 Booy Issue.

Apologies as I know this unit is not supported at all these days but has served me well so wanted to

try and get this working again.

OS 6 6.10.9 was installed (my initial OS 6 upgrade with the help of an excellent Tech support person a few years ago) and has updates and run flawlessly since.

I recently tried a snapshot restore to go to some older files and the system hung/crashed.

I couldn't access web Gui, so tried an OS reinstall and then all worked fine.

Disks were doing a resync and all finished ok.

Next morning the system was powered up but was powered up but hung with no PING or access at all.

I have rigged up a Monitor, Keyboard and mouse and created a USB recovery key created.

Thought I would try to update to ReadyNASOS-6.10.10-x86_64 via USB:

1. Insert USB in front USB port.

2. Rebooted with backup button pressed - BIOS loads and syslinux loads but just then monitor screen goes blank and the LCD screen stays on "ReadyNAS"

I've tried pressing the reset or pressing the backup button to see if the options scroll but not go.

Am I missing something here or should this boot into the USB?

I'd like to get working even just to access/backup the current shares if possible, so don't want to go the factory reset if possible.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Not convinced a USB recovery was the right move.

Lots of possible causes here, including a failing PSU or a problem disk.

Have you tried booting normally with the monitor connected?  Any clues there?

  • HI Stephen,

Yes boots and ReadyNAS gets stuck at 99% but once the initial load finishes output to the monitor clears. I was hoping it would have a Linux login or something but no luck. I've reinstalling OS via boot menu a few times but same symptoms.

You could try tech support mode.  If that boots normally you could try manually mounting the volume.

  • At BIOS boot shows no issues - SMART passed for all disk and initially boots into the OS.  That's why I decided to try the USB recovery as that was mentioned in a few searches.

  • Hi Stephen,

Techsupport > rebooted then displays DebugModel[51249] and the local IP address. Tried pinging = OK, no web GUI or SSH access.

  • Tried Raidar and shows up ok.

Looked up your reply to another post :-) and can login via telnet now. any commands to run to give an idea or can i flash from linux iteslf?

I don't think this is the OS.  Did you download the log zip from RAIDar?  It would be useful to get them.

I'd start with rnutil chroot to mount the OS partition and chroot.

Then I'd use smartctl to test each of the disks.   I'd start with the short test, and then run the long one.   This will take quite a while, but I think it is important to rule out a disk failure.

I would then try to manually mount the data volume.  Details on that depend on the expansion history.

  • Thanks, I'll try that Stephan and let post the results. On bootup the system states no SMART errors but I'll see what results come from smartctl.

The lockup at 99% suggests file system corruption.  Hopefully either not the case, or minor.

Normally the smart stats only are updated if a disk i/o operation generates an error.  The full smartctl test will read every sector on the disk, so that will uncover any latent problems.
