"... cannot open this document"
Hi all,
A few days ago I started getting the following error on certain files when trying to open them: "(Excel / Word) cannot open this document. The document might be in use, might not be a valid document or contain invalid characters" Or "...Could not be found"
This does not happen to all files/folders. I am using Mac Book Pro and accessing them through the shared area of Finder.
I can copy the files on to my desktop and they open fine to make changes. if I then copy them back to the same or a different location I get the same error message. If I copy them locally again the changes remian.
If I make a duplicate of the document in the same location with a slightly different name, I get the same message.
This doesnt appear to be a permissions issue with my account as I have read/write on all the areas concerned. I have logged out of my access and have tried logging in as the admin account but it has the same issue.
The file names have correct characters.
If I sign directly into the Readynas drive then the files are accessible from there.
It seems like it could be a communication/permissions issue specifically between my laptop and the ReadyNas drive.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hello MarkCarra,
I have some questions to ask, I have summarized them below:
- Have you tried opening the files on another computer? As well as non-Mac.
- Where did you get or create this files before it got in to the NAS?
- What is the model number and firmware version of your NAS?
Regards,

Hi JennC
All of the laptops on the network are macs but I have checked that one of the other users is able to open the documents that I am unable to. Interestly one of the files is locked for editing by me, even though I cant access it.
I am able to access the files from the readycloud app on my phone. (My readycloud account is different from my local account)
The documents were created and saved by me on the one laptop.
Model number RN21200, firmware 6.6.0
I deleted and recreated my acount to see if that made any difference but it didn't.
Thanks for your help

by ' other users' you mean other user account on other computer or your account on other computer.
Do you have similar issues with xL/Word files placed on other remote location? Or pdf/txt files?
I had similar problem with files on remote drive (not NAS) and the problem was with a computer. I suggest clearing with ccleaner or other, or even repairing MS Office
