Ok, THIS is interesting..
I followed the instructions at viewtopic.php?f=71&t=59974 to setup a separate share and enable it for time machine use.. And it worked!
So perhaps it's something to do with multiple machines backing up to the same share?
I will have to setup a user for each staff member who backs up..
