I'm doubtful about that. I have several Macs (10.5, 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 ) backing up to both a Pro 6 (4.2.22) and 516 (6.0.5) without issue. One thing I note about newer Mac OS X releases is that they seem to identify their sparsebundle by NAME and not MAC address. Are you sure that none of your Macs has the same hostname? (In Sharing settings)
