CoW was used in all OS6 releases - it is essential for snapshots.

What do you mean? I thought bitrot protection COW only became an option from 6.2. as opposed to COW snapshots
But starting with 6.2, toggling bitrot protection also toggles CoW. if CoW is disabled, then it is enabled when the snapshot is taken, and then immediately disabled after the snapshot is completed.
