Just how long does it take to get a firmware update that works?

Thank you for your honesty. That really is refreshing.
You can understand why I am reluctant to attempt a beta update when a supposed well tested update has caused me such problems. At the moment with others saying that their units are freezing I count myself lucky that my unit is functioning well apart it seems from failed backups to USB.
At the moment my backups are manual by taking copies of files I know I have changed. As this files are for projects all I have to do is keep a manual written list and make copies every single night. This way should disaster strike I have a perfect backup up to the point when I updated my firmware and individual backups of projects since then. I could create a new up to date copy of my data. It's just laborious.
Tell me, why given that this is twice this has happened to me, why is it that returning the NAS to an earlier firmware either isn't possible or isn't made to be possible.
Thank you.

Keep in mind that I don't work for Netgear.

I do get it, though RC1 has created no problems for me. You can downgrade back to 6.4.0, so the risk is much less than the 6.4.0 upgrade was.
In the meantime, could you connect the USB drive to a PC, and create a new backup job to copy over the network?

With most updates downgrading is possible, but occasionally there are changes made in an update which are necessary but unfortunately mean we need to block downgrades. We don't take this decision lightly and do internal testing to confirm that it is necessary. Downgrades that we have blocked, if allowed may have lead to problems such as losing your data.
The release notes for 6.4.0 clearly indicate that you can't go back to prior releases. 6.4.0 contains some major updates, it's the biggest update we've made since we first released ReadyNAS OS 6.There have been some who have downgraded to 6.2.x and done a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything).
All firmware is QA tested.

the RC1 has not reolved any of my issues, the system will still not stay up for more than an hour with any apps running
Which apps do you have installed and do you have the latest versions of those apps? Can you send in your logs (see the Sending Logs link in my sig).
Firmware updates include some bug fixes, but there are some limits as to what they can do to help.
If a 3rd party app is incompatible with a firmware then it is up to the 3rd party developer to make a newer version of their app that is fixed. The 104 has 512MB RAM. If one of your apps has a memory leak then that could very quickly lead to an out of memory condition.
Also, some bug fixes are designed to prevent new cases of a problem but may not fix existing cases of a problem.Furthermore whilst we do our best to fix common bugs that are encountered, fixes for some may not be ready in time for a firmware update.

Morning.
Yes I hear all this but obviously I'm extremely unhappy when my functioning NAS system no longer protects my data without my manual involvement.
Yes I understand what you say about 6.4.0 not being downgradeable BUT when accessing the admin section of my NAS I am told that an update is available and I am given the option to accept this upgrade. Unless I then access Netgears website seperately I am not aware of the 'small print'. I am not the only one who has pointed this out. If upgrades are not downgradeable then users should be told before they accept the upgrade offered on the admin page.
Surely given the problems 6.4.0 has given to people many people would not have upgraded had they known it was not reversible?

Yes I could but this then means leaving my computers on when work has finished in order to let the backup take place.
At the moment it's easier to simply manually copy the few GBs of data before I finish.
Thanks for the idea though.

Ah well, got 6.4.1 this morning.
Installed it.....fine.
Did an immediate backup......which should have been completed by now.
Now cannot find the 102 on my network. Raidar cannot find the 102 either.
Just been to check it and it's sitting there doing something as if it's doing a back up but its lost to my network.
Thanks a bunch Netgear, thanks a bunch, 6.4.1 is worse than 6.4.0 at least I could use my 102 will all my data.

Ok, I went to my 102, I couldn't get any control, I couldn't turn it off at the front power button so I killed the power.
My backup job was a simple one, 32GB USB stick in the front socket which used to simply perform a backup of projects currently being undertaken. So I removed the stick.
Waited 30 seconds, reapplied power and up the 102 came.
Found it on the network, Raidar found it too.
My data appears ok.
The stick had 18 folders on it, it should have had 673 had it completed the backup.
I'll let others be test pilots, I have better things to do called running my business....

So I can see lots of other people are reading my comments but is anyone else having problems with 6.4.1?
Sent this to Netgear today.
My 102 unit had 6.2.5 and was working perfectly.
I updated the firmware to 6.4.0 and lost my USB backup facility as it seems have most people.
On updating to 6.4.1 if I attempt a backup via USB my NAS simply freezes after a few minutes having backed up only a few files and I have to power down the NAS to get control of it again.
Is this ever going to be sorted?
