9 MB/s in ReadyNAS NV+ v2 with RAID5

I have a ReadyNAS NV+ v2 (firmware RAIDiator 5.3.7), and I'm getting low performance writing (9 MB/s) and reading (11-12 MB/s) large files.

My nas is configured with 4x3TB WD Red (WD30EFRX) in RAID5, with only two shares (the "backup" and "media" that it has by default), only SMB active (the rest of the protocols are disabled) and the write cache enabled. The permissions are the ones by default too.

The NAS is connected to a PLC (Devolo 500 AV plus) in a gigabit network. With the same PLC (exact the same, in the same plug and with the same network cable), I get 24-25 MB/s transferring large files between my home computers, so I think that 9 MB/s is very low for a NAS that, in many benchmarks, is one of the fastest.

I cannot use the performance tips I have read in this forum, because I have Dashboard (1.0.0.264), not the Frontview of other ReadyNAS models. The only performance option I have is the write cache (enabled). And I cannot upgrade the memory, I believe that in this model it cannot be done.

Help is appreciated!!!

  • I forgot... the "Enabled Oplocks" options is checked in SMB settings

Can you do a test w/o traversing the powerline network?
  • I am having a similar experience with poor performance against benchmark figures for my Netgear NV+ v2. My speeds are around 29MB/s write and 23MB/s read (yes write is faster than read). Connected via a Netgear GS506 GB switch with cat6 cable. If I restart the NAS I can get close to benchmark speeds but shortly after reverts to the speeds quoted above. These are via SMB shares. Another test I do is with my Netgear NeoTV550. The network test shows 60+Mb/s from my ReadyNAS Duo V1 but only 19Mb/s from my ReadyNAS NV+ v2. I only use these two devices to share my movie collection with 2 550's. These speeds from the NV+ are not fast enough for Blur-ray ISO's. I have noticed one share that I created (nothing to do with streaming) has no sharing protocol checkmarked and errors when you try to select SMB?? Certainly I will create another share and move my data across. I bought this for some extra space and expectation that it would also out perform my Duo V1 but it is struggling to do so. Running the latest firmware. Any ideas on how to get this to work closer to benchmark speeds would be appreciated?

Do you mean GS605??? If you are actually seeing stuttering on the NTV550, try using NFS to access the media share instead of CIFS.

By direct-connect I meant a cable connected directly between the NAS and PC (not via a switch).
  • Thanks mdgm, will do a direct connect soon. I have replicated a restart of client (Windows7 64bit), switch and NV+v2 to gain full benchmark (close enough) transfer speeds for read and write with multiple transfer of a 1.5GB (avi) and 9Gb (iso) test files. However, speeds will return to mid 20MB/s overnight for both read and write with just the NV+v2 and switch turned on in that time. nulhan can you replicate this behaviour as well? Will let you know how I go with direct connect in the next day or two.
