added 3x8tb but only showing 7.27tb of data

Yes. Wait for the resync to complete, you should see the full array size then.
Note it is displayed in TiB, not TB, so it should be shown as ~14.5 TiB.

Also. my readynas dashboard reports it as TB so I was just quoting that - I didnt know about TiB so ill be doing some reading! thank you!

No. The label is TB (1000*1000*1000*1000 bytes) but it actually is TiB (1024*1024*1024*1024 bytes).
8 TB is actually 7.27 TiB. Google will convert the units (try typing "8 TB in TiB").

drives are finally added and I can see my storage now. Exactly as you said 14.54TiB now available for data storage and the remaing reserved as redundancy.
