Aug 24, 2016Admin group missing OS 6.5.1
I've just done a full factory reset on a RN 316, setup the user accounts but I'm unable to put any users into the "admin" group, in fact three is no "admin" group in the frontview UI Groups screen, only "users". When I try to create an "admin" group, it says it already exists.
Also the folder permissions are messed up. When I try to give "read/write" access to a folder for a user, it doesn't work (in this case using Windows SMB). I can't get access to the share (just repeats u/p request). I've confirmed the login credetials match the user details on the NAS, but still not working (just does nothing, rereshes the drives list). I've also reset the "File Access" settings but that resets the group/folder owners to "guest" which I don't want.
Never had this issue last time I setup under OS 4.+

That's true, though my recollection is that it is worked this way before (or at least for a while). I think the issue is that people expected those users to have admin access via the web ui. You could try putting it in the idea exchange (asking that ability to be put back).

You might want to try 6.5.2 beta ( https://community.netgear.com/t5/ReadyNAS-Beta-Release/ReadyNASOS-6-5-2-T500-Beta-2/m-p/1116020#U1116020 ). You can downgrade back to 6.5.1 if it doesn't help.

Thanks for the suggestions. Idk why they changed it. We as the owners of the NAS should have full control on what groups/access our users get, i prefer to have a 2nd admin user as backup and not give away root access for administration of the box. Even tho admin/root access is never a good idea for a user, having a username 'admin' that has the same password as 'root' is even worse :(
I re-installed the OS again, and now the 'home' folder is correctly called 'Home Folders' - something strange going on. I'll try the folder permissions to see if I can make it work before installing a beta OS.

SMB is pretty broken in OS 6.5.1 - i have a good mind to downgrade back to a working OS with a factory reset,...
SMB admin access is completely gone for OS 6.5.1, use to be able to LAN to the NAS with admin u/p and gain access to all folders....a new 'feature'?
...wasted of 2 hours testing on 3xPC's using Win7/10
