I would format it to EXT3 via Frontview (after copying the files off it of course). This will give you the best performance if you intend to keep it connected to the NAS. Would need to install EXT3 driver on your Mac to be able to read this though if you were to connect the USB disk directly to a Mac.
If you don't intend to connect it to the NAS then format it using your Mac to HFS+. Your NAS cannot read disks formatted this way.
