Almost dead duo v1 after taking a dive off the desk...

You can also get the data off the drives with a windows PC using linux reader (http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/). It will only see the data partition on disk 1 (not disk 2) - however since both disks are intact you should be ok.
I'd suggest doing that, and buying a new NAS (instead of a used v1 chassis). Even if you decide to go used, I'd still pull the data off with linux reader.
