Alternative LMS(squeezeserver) configurations
For at least 5 years, I have been running a readynas NV (NV+ less the LCD) (now with a pair of 2TB seagates) with squeezeserver to my squeezebox v3 connected to my old-school Marantz 7001 amplifier. I use iPeng on an iphone to control it.
The interface has never been fast, but the sound was almost always great (1GB Cat5E just in case). However, each year the library grows (now about 400Gb, mostly FLAC) and the interface gets less and less responsive-- sometimes even crating pauses in playing. (I also use the NAS for timemachine backups on 2 computers and general file storage). I need to do something to improve this.
I have an iMac (first gen Inte) that can only be connected to the network via Wifi 56g. I thought to move the Squeezeserver application to the iMac and keep the music on the NAS. (this machine is on most of the time that I would want to play music). My fear is that 802.11g speeds to and from the iMac would create a new bottleneck. Even if I installed a Powerline HD connection, I am concerned that it will never be fast due to limitations in the Squeezeserver design.
1. Anyone using the NV+ as dumb storage (external computer) in a Squeezeserver + SB configuration?
2. Does Squeezeserver reasonably scale to large dBs when you use a more serious processes than the NV's sparc or is the software architecture optimized for smaller libraries? (eg. if I bought a mac mini server or a readnas pro would I still have the problem?)

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired2. Would recommend transferring data across network to ReadyNAS Pro. This is much more powerful and will handle large libraries much better.
- virgiliomiAspirantThe interface is generated dynamically by the LMS software, based on database queries and whatnot. With the slower processor in the NV, this is why the slow interface response is experienced. Especially if any transcoding has to be done in realtime from one format to another.
If you need the Business features of the Pro, then go with the Pro. Otherwise, I'd opt for an Ultra Plus model, as they have similar specs... unless the Pro models are just cheaper than the Ultra Plus models.
