Any way to adjust disk energy saving settings?

It's a ReadyNAS Duo v1.
Here are the suggested changes (shouldn't require being put in a different computer):
smartctl -l scterc,70,70 /dev/sdx (x=drive)
and
hdparm -B 254 /dev/sdx (x=drive)
The changes make sense to me, but it would be good to know if these would be *known* to jack things up.
