ATA errors at 42, should I return hard drive?

Hello.

3 out of 4 of my hard drives have ATA errors at 46. I am wondering if I should return the hard drives or just watch with caution?

What exactly is an ATA error and is it like reallocated sectors which a few can be corrected without a problem however if the number grows to a certain critical mass, then it will cause a real problem?

P.S.

You know in the Indiana Jones movie when he said " Snakes, why did it have to be snakes" I am the same way when I open a raid system and I see " Green Drives' I say " Green drives, why did it have to be green drives"

When I log into frontview web admin screen, it said that its a " ReadyNAS X6" however in the RAIDiator software, it comes up as "readynas 600"

Either way it's a very old EOL NAS.

May I ask what exactly do you see in the log files to indicate there is a compatible issue with the hard drives? I know that one of the drives shows 0 ATA errors and the rest show 42. If there is a compatiable issue, would it effect all the drives. I think they are all the 2TB WD green drive.

If WDTLER had been run on the disk with 0 errors or it was added after upgrading to 4.1.7 (or later) that would explain it showing no ATA errors. If there was a compatibilty issue with the other drives one would expect the count to be the same (or close to the same) on all of them.

It's up to you whether you choose to replace the disks or not. If you RMA'd them you'd likely get drives with the same issue.

Is the WDTLER software built into the Raidiator software or is that something I run on the desktop?
Currently the readynas seem to be in a ready to use status with all space available on 4.1.8 firmware however if I were to do a factory reset on 4.1.8 or later, it would break the machine however the reset works on previous firmware. Could this be due to the compatible issues with that particular hard drive?

These ATA errors are communication errors between the readynas and the hard drive? Should I only be concern if they are growing in size? Should I start copying data to test out the machine and see if the errors grow?

    Thanks.

You should be concerned if the count increases in size whilst you are running RAIDiator 4.1.7 or later. As I mentioned earlier in the thread support was added for drives that don't support TLER in 4.1.7.
