Attached USB Drives Now Seen as Read Only

Hi,

I have a ReadyNAs 314 for over a year and running with no problems. It is running 6.2. I have two (2) 4 TB Seagate External USB drives attached for backup. For the past few months, backup has worked flawlessly.

This morning, I woke up and all five backup jobs scheduled for this morning have failed. The message is that the USB_HDD1 is seen as "Read Only". Backup last worked on Friday morning (28th Nov) and there were no jobs scheduled for Saturday or Sunday morning. These are the changes I made recently, so I do not know if any of these have affected backup:

* On Saturday I activated the DropBox connection in FrontView.
* On Saturday I activated SMB Plus app to see what options it offered. I made no changes in SMB Plus app after installation.

This morning, after receiving the failed backup messages, I have done the following:

* Turned off the DropBox integration in FrontView.
* Removed the SMB Plus app.
* Restarted the NAS

Despite this, the backups still fail when I attempt to run the backup job manually, with the same message - the USB drives are "Read Only".

When I view File Access for each of the attached USB HDDs in Frontview, there are three settings - "Security", "Default Access" and "Reset" - I cannot see any options when I click on any of these menu items.

Hope there is a solution.

Thanks,
Phil

How are the USB drives formatted?

If NTFS, did you try plugging them into a Windows PC? I suspect they are marked as "dirty" - if so, if Windows asks if it should repair them, let it.
  • Thanks Stephen. I will try that suggestion tonight when I get home from work and report back.

  • I had this happen a little while ago, I think after upgrading to 6.2 but perhaps because my daughter unplugs the USB drive without dismounting it - when she wants to copy something direct.

As StephenB suggests, plugged into a windows 7 machine, scan & fix errors and all good.
  • Hi,

I took out both USB drives and connected to a Win 7 computer. Scanned for errors and plugged them back into the NAS. Backups are now working.

    Thanks for your help.

    Phil
