ZeroTier can be set up from the GUI.  You first need to download the Netgear App version (which is based on a very old version of ZeroTier, but does still work (and I still use it).  You can find it here: https://github.com/NAStools/zerotierone/releases .  Use the Upload function on the Apps page to upload it to the NAS, and then enable it.  You'll also need to set up an account at ZeroTier Central (https://my.zerotier.com/login )to assign the NAS to a ZeroTier network and maybe check ut some documentation.

There is a slightly newer version of zerotier (for Intel based systems only, as yours is), which is here: https://github.com/didyouexpectthat/zerotierone/releases/tag/readynas%2F1.2.4-nt1-RC1 .  But, there's a bit of a catch-22 with it.  It has no GUI of it's own, so you have to use SSH to configure it.  And without a VPN already in place, you don't have an easy way to do that configuration remotely.
