Backing up Windows 7 Library
I'm a Newbie User. I searched and couldn't find this in the forum, but I could have missed it. I am very familiar with Windows, Backups and writing bug reports.
=>I am trying to backup my Windows Library - My Documents, Music, Pictures & VIdeo. Host is "Gamer" and "Users" is the directory.
I selected "Users" and "Share with". "Advanced Sharing" and set Everyone to full permissions.
Manually started the backup job.
Manually start Backup and the program gives an error "Reason for failure:
Error encountered copying data from remote source path //Gamer/GamerUsers ==> /backup/GamerUsers due to permission denial on one or more files"
Job: Backup Gamer
Protocol: cifs-ab
Source: //Gamer/GamerUsers
Destination: [backup]/GamerUsers
NT code 0x8000002d listing \All Users\*
NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED listing \Default\AppData\Local\Application Data\*
NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED listing \Default\AppData\Local\History\*
(etc)
Backup failed. Mon May 28 13:56:20 PDT 2012.
=>I added My UserID path "John" and "Shared With Specific People" including John (owner) and Homegroup (Read)
Manually started the backup job.
Job: Backup Gamer
Protocol: cifs-ab
Source: //Gamer/GamerUsers/John
Destination: [backup]/GamerUsers
NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED listing \John\*
=>Added "My Documents" and shared it.
Job: Backup Gamer
Protocol: cifs-ab
Source: //Gamer/GamerUsers/John/"My Documents"
Destination: [backup]/GamerUsers
NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED listing \John\My Documents
Total bytes written: 0
Files copied: 0
Backup failed. Mon May 28 14:24:56 PDT 2012.
Reason for failure:
Error encountered copying data from remote source path //Gamer/GamerUsers/John/"My Documents" ==> /backup/GamerUsers due to permission denial on one or more files
=>I'm lost at this point. How do I get past the permissions problem?
TIA
John

- HERBIEOAspirantHi john
take a look at my post here it might help you.
http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=62968&start=15#p356698 - JohnBealsAspirantThank you Herbieo. I set up my sharing to not only include Everyone, but the userid "John". I didn't have a password on the PC, so I added one. Window's 7 does not have an "Administrator" user, rather the userid John has Administrator rights. I still got errors. I removed the password because I don't need it on my system. This is where I'm at now. At least some files are copying, but still fails.
Backup Source: Remote
Name: Remote: Windows (Archive Bit)
Host: Gamer
Path: GamerUsers (C:\Users shared as "GamerUsers", Shared with Everyone and John, Full control. Network path is \\GAMER\GamerUsers. Password Protection: People without a users account and password for this computer can access folders shared with everyone)
Login: blank
Password: blank
Manually started the backup.

If you are on the Windows 7 machine, can you browse into these directories? - onimodAspirantThis may be of no help at all, but I have previously run into windows problems that were solved by using a password.
There are seemingly some things that windows won't do with out it. - HERBIEOAspirantJohn on windows 7 there is a default admin account but its hidden you can only see it when you start in safe mode, i think the problem you are having is trying to share the users folder because there is the administrators account in that folder which is for the main default admin account, you need to share just your own folder inside the users folder and then set it up like i showed in my post.
update.
i forgot to say allso inside the users folder there is a default folder but its hidden if you look at the errors you are getting it points to that folder, so if you try like i said above it should work i think.

\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\History\History.IE5\index.dat - StephenBGuru - Experienced User\Default\AppData\Local\Application Data is not just hidden, it is a considered an OS protected file. It is a symbolic folder link (e.g. shortcut), and if you click on it you will get access denied even if you have administrator rights.
Application Data exists (and is similarly protected) in all user folders. If you know a specific subfolder name within Application Data, you can access it by pasting the full name into explorer, But you cannot list its contents even if you are the user, and you have administrator rights.
\Default\AppData\Local\History\ is similar (an OS protected symbolic link). On my Windows 7 Professional system, I don't get access denied if I click on it, however it doesn't open to anything either.
