Backup All Home shares to external USB drive not working

Hi everyone,

Using ReadyNAS OS 6.7.4, just created a job to backup all my users home shares to an external USB drive. I'm using Rsync since it's the only way I can do folder exclusions and delete files on the target that no longer exists on the source, etc.

The thing is, the job runs but it only copies the users folders, but not the contents. I can see a "home" directory on the external USB drive, and every single user folder inside of it, but they're all emtpy.

I know Rsync works as I have set up several other jobs for other shares and they are synced up to the external drive without any issues.  You can see from the screenshots that everything works, but the log show no files are being copied.

1. Setting the source to All Home Shares

2. Destination set to remote Rsync, which is actually an enternal USB drive with Rsyn enabled.

3. And it connects without problems.

4. A full backup set for the first time

5. Yet the log show nothing is copied.

Just FYI, here's a log for a different share, showing that it run for over 2 hours and it copied about 500GB of data

Backup Job Name: Ingeniería (Local)
Backup Job Type: Full
Protocol: rsync
Backup Source: [Ingenieria]/
Backup Destination: [remote:rsync]/localhost::USB_HDD_15/
Backup Start Time: Sun Jun 4 2017 16:21:06
Backup Finish Time: Sun Jun 4 2017 18:28:55
Backup Status: Success

sending incremental file list
[extremely long list of files...]

sent 499,160,596,943 bytes received 11,137,187 bytes 65,195,811.94 bytes/sec
total size is 499,000,817,084 speedup is 1.00

So I know it works. I've been using Rsync for a long time with this ReadyNAS. It's just not working for All Home Shares. Any ideas?

  • FYI, 6.7.5-T299 (Beta 1) seems to have resolved this issue for me.

Try using the NAS admin credentials for the source (otherwise you are using guest, which doesn't have access to the source folder).

Hmm. I am using the admin credentials, but just to be sure I changed it to root and see what happens.

You were using admin credentials on the destination, but you didn't specify any credentials on the source.

Glad to know I'm not the only one. Hopefully they'll patch it soon.

As a test, I created a backup job using Rsync for only one user home folder using the same admin credentials as all other jobs. It worked, it copied all folder structure and contents. So I guess the problems is Rsync has to start from the root.

I won't create a separate job for each user as it'd painful to do so, but it's a start.
