Backup Connection Error

I'm trying to backup my PC (Windows Vista, 64-bit) using Frontview. The PC and ReadyNAS are both on my local home network, and I don't have a login/password on my computer. I've selected "Remote: Windows/NAS (Timestamp)" as the backup type, the PC's IP address (192.168.1.64) as the host, and "C$" as the path. But when I select "Test Connection", I get "Error connecting to //192.168.1.64/C$" I've also tried using "C:\Users\John\Documents" as my path, but I get the same type of error - "Error connecting to //192.168.1.64/C:\Users\John\Documents". Please help!

Just to be clear... you can access the windows folders you are trying to back up from other Windows machines, but frontview backup fails on test connection?

Also did you try the backup anyway? Sometimes test connection fails but the backup works. BTW frontview help gives some useful hints on syntax (slashes, etc).
  • You can also try just entering the ip address of the share to be backed up (assuming it is on the same lan and workgroup, and will be more reliable if you have that ip address set as fixed). So enter 192.168.xx.xx/share name and see if that works.
  • Still struggling with this one, but thanks for the suggestions.
    1. yes I can see the folders from other computers on the network.
    2. just tried doing the back up anyhow (using my login and the ReadyNas special login I created) - No Dice :?
    3. Tried using the IP address in the path e.g. 192.168...../Users - didn't connect.

Some other progress though: without setting any special permissions or worrying about the how I typed the computer name or slashes or all the other little things many people have mentioned, the backup worked first time from another computer on my network! That machine is running Windows Vista - so I am back to the explanation that there is some Windows 7 security issue I have missed.

Just in case anyone out there can help (I am still sure it must be something silly I am doing), this is what I have tried since my last post:

    1. Setting sharing for C:, and for Users, and for ShareFolder to include: everyone, mylogin and readyNas login (where mylogin = the administrator login for the Windows 7 computer and ReadyNas login = the special account with administrator rights that I created to try and solve this problem). I set all these permissions to read and write.
    2. I tried deleting my HomeGroup.
    3. I changed the Workgroup and set the new name under settings on the NAS.
    4. I tried most of the suggestions on http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=37693.
    5. Tried many of the suggestions from here http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65753
    6. Set up an extra permission in Norton 360 Firewall (just in case).

None of these things helped and none were necessary on the Vista machine.

I do not seem to be the only one with this bug. Any help is appreciated.

Based on your posts, I am thinking the following settings are what you are supposed to be using:
    (a) backup source
    pulldown: Windows/NAS timestamp
    host: //192.168.x.x
    path: Users
    login: administrative login for Windows

    (b) backup destination
    pulldown: share: sharename
    path:
    login: readynas login

Is that what you are trying?
  • Thanks! Some success!

The part (a) is the same as what I have been trying but I typed it in again. Test Connection still reported a fail. (Note I tried with and without the preceding slashes - if I put them in the fail message has four slashes (i.e. connection failed at ////192.168.x.x)).

Part (b) I have tried less often (only a couple of times based on your previous suggestion that back up may still work even if test connect failed).

At first I wasn't able to specify a path so I went in and deleted the backup share and created a new one called backups (with sub-directories for each of my computers on my network). With my other successful (Vista) computer I had just specified the 'backup share' in the drop-down menu and didn't enter the NAS password or path. This time I entered the (newly created) path and the NAS login and NAS password as you suggested.

I tried the second test connection button........ and got an error. Couldn't connect.

I pressed 'apply' anyhow and then pressed the 'go' button. It worked! It is backing up now.

Thanks for your help and patience. I am still not sure exactly why it was tricky on one computer but not the other nor why the connection tests fail but I'm simply happy it is finally working. I will go back and close all the sharing permissions and open firewalls I have set up (one by one) as it seems likely these were not the cause of the problem. If I find out more, I will report back for others interest but would also be keen to hear any theories as to why this was difficult (admittedly for a newbie first-timer).

    Thanks again.
