Backup Failed - error copying data
I am unable to successfully run a backup of my Pictures folder onto an external USB drive.
I see messages such as...
Error encountered copying data from source path Pictures ==> /USB_HDD_1/backup/Pictures2 due to unknown reason. Please see log.
cp: cannot create directory '/USB_HDD_1/backup/Pictures2/george/.AppleDouble': File exists
cp: writing '/USB_HDD_1/backup/Pictures2/iPhoto Library/Backup/Library6.iPhoto.bak': Input/output error
cp: cannot create directory '/USB_HDD_1/backup/Pictures2/iPhoto Library/Backup/.AppleDouble': Read-only file system
cp: preserving times for '/USB_HDD_1/backup/Pictures2/iPhoto Library/Backup': Read-only file system
.
.
.
cp: preserving times for '/USB_HDD_1/backup/Pictures2': Read-only file system
My backup job is to copy data from
media:Pictures
to
USB (Front Port)
backup/Pictures2
NB Many files are copied successfully so I do have write access to the disk.
I am running a Macbook Pro and the external USB is ext3.
I'm sure you'll ask to see the logs but I can't access them either. When I click on "Backup Logs' I see the message
- but they never come ( I have waited for hours).
Why do the logs not display? Where are they stored so I can copy them to you manually?
Thanks in advance.
Richard

- addictAspirantWeird. I'm suddenly getting a similar error when trying to do the same. I am getting an i/o error when attempting to write to my external (backup) hard drive. If I browse (from Win7) to my ReadyNas and try to explore my USB drive, it errors on me and won't open. If I plug the USB drive directly into my Win7 PC, it opens/reads just fine. I even ran diagnostics on the drive and saw no errors.

Could be a problem with the USB drive or the filesystem on it.
The standard is if a ext volume has error, it get mounted as Read Only. This is to enable you to do an "fscheck" on the volume to repair any errors in the filesystem.
In any case, if you have another USB drive to back up to, this shouldn't happen.

You could try: Status :: Logs :: Download All Logs
This saves all the log files in a ZIP file. There will be a bakcup_001.log inside. There also could be some userfull info in dmesg.log - addictAspirantMy disk diagnostics completed without error but I couldn't get SMART data from the USB - is this normal for a USB drive or could this be pointing to an error of the disk?
- ewokNETGEAR ExpertI/O errors usually indicate a bad USB drive.

ya, I was thinking the same thing, but since it mounted fine on my Win7 PC I wasn't sure ... It only seems to fail when attached to my Duo. The Admin console shows it mounted/connected. Even discounting Backup, I can't even browse to it when I plug it into the Duo. It used to work just fine, but it's been a while and now it doesn't ... firmware? - addictAspirantso ... reading some more forums, I came across viewtopic.php?f=31&t=51761&start=0 that seems really similar to my situation. As a result, I tried plugging in a flash drive to my Duo's front USB port ... and it was recognized and browsable as expected.
Since the USB _drive_ is recognized and usable in Win7 but not by/via the Duo, do you still think it's bad? - ewokNETGEAR ExpertJust having the drive be recognizable isn't enough, try running a good disk check utility on it. A bad drive can often work fine for simple browsing.

I ran the manufacturer test utility and got a vague "warning" status with no details. I'm giving up on it and getting a new external USB drive.
Thanks, ewok - fixmacsGuideI am curious what became of this problem. I have the same problem with a new external USB hard drive. I cannot access the backup logs, as noted above, and the backups have been failing.
- ewokNETGEAR ExpertWhy can't you access the backup logs?
