Backup from PC to ReadyNAS over wifi
hello, we are attempting to set up a backup job using the backup app that came with ReadyNAS 102. It is brand new, all firmware is up to date, we are running windows 7, all updates installed. Everything is connected via wifi. we are following the Software manual instructions. We are confused because around page 250-251 we are required to identify whether this is a "remote" backup. Is it? Everything is running on the wireless network, we are not trying to run this from a browser in another city. But if we try to select the non-remote TYPE, we are not able to enter the host, path, user, etc. so we are GUESSING that in this case (backing up) the word REMOTE is being used inconsistently at best. Can someone please confirm this (or not)?
Secondly, if we are to assume this is meant to be called a remote backup TYPE, can you please provide examples, including, and especially, syntax for HOST and PATH? For example, if the source HOST is the PC, which is named "JERRY-PC", how is that entered? And if the source PATH is the path for the documents on the pc, what is the syntax for that? Example, "C:/user/steve/documents" ? Some examples would be so helpful. This should be so simple but we haved tried many variations and the test connection continues to fail with no real clue as to the reason. again, we are following along on pages 250-251 of the manual.
Thank you in advance!

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe word "remote" doesn't apply to the backup. If you look more carefully you will see that it applies to the both source and destination of the backup. "remote" means "not on the RN102".
So in your PC example, the source is remote: Windows/NAS (Timestamp). The destination would be a share on the NAS (share: Sharename).
The host should be \\JERRY-PC
To get this to work, you need to share a folder on JERRY-PC with Windows File Sharing, making sure the NAS has access to both the share itself and the files in it. For instance, if you shared the documents folder, then the path would be /documents.
BTW, my approach to PC backup is somewhat different. I use Acronis backup on the PC, and simply set its destination to a shared folder on the NAS. I use Frontview backup to back up the NAS, but not the PCs. - ValleypeachAspirantStephenB,
Thank you for the reply. My suspicion regarding use of term "remote" is clarified.
Upon reflecting on your comment about how you back up your PCs, this now makes much more sense and I can see that the solution is not so much SIMPLE as it is OBVIOUS.
We will check out the Acronis app. Thx for the tip!
Best regards,
Val.
