Backup not working

additional symptom;
using a usb flash drive plugged into the front usb port (and is recognized as confirmed by being able to browse it via the network), the backup function still fails, but with a different error message;
destination is a usb device that is currently not connected
even though it is....
dont know if this helps or not, but i cant get ANY frontview backup function to work in any way.
