Let me add myself to the list of those people unable to get backup working from Windows XP shares.
I installed the new firmware on Jan 7. Ran two backups on Jan 10 that completed successfully. Ran the same backups today, Feb 10 and both failed with "unable to connect" messages. I really can't think of any changes I made to the system or the network in the past month.
