Backup USB external HD to ReadyNAS Duo v2

I have a ReadyNAS Duo v2
I am trying to backup an external HD on the NAS that I connected via USB, but it does not seem to actually perform the backup.
I created a backup job with the source being USB Device (Front Port) and destination is a WD_Photo_Backup share I set up.
When I click on "Run" it looks like the back-up job is initiating, but after 5 seconds, the job is complete.
I have 100 GB of data on the external HD, so I know the data is not transferring. Also, when I look at the back-up share, I see it is empty
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
George

  • How was the disk formatted, and is the USB disk mounted by the nas?
Can you browse to the USB share on the nas with the disk connected and view the data?

    What firmware are you using?
  • The external HD is a 1 TB, Western Digital HD, format type is: Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
I can see that there is a USB HDD connected to the NAS when plugged into the NAS. However, I cannot view any of the data.
When connected, I have two new shares that show up: USB_HDD_1_1 and USB_HDD_1_2

My ReadyNAS firmware version is 5.3.10.
  • The nas won't be able to read that disk with that formatting.
You'll need to connect that disk to your mac and copy over your network.
It needs to be ntfs, ext3 or ( I think) fat32.
  • I was wondering if that was the issue.
Is it possible to back-up the external hard-drive over the network?
