Basic question on restarting MySQL

Hi guys

Just now I tried to restart MySQL by typing...
# mysqladmin shutdown
# mysql &

but this led to the following error...
InnoDB: Check that you do not already have another mysqld process
InnoDB: Check that you do not already have another mysqld process

Just for future reference, how should I best restart MySQL? As far as I know, I've only got the MysqlOn add-on installed.

Thanks
