  • Boeze, Stephen,
For my information, what is the difference between Bios and Firmware,
or do you mean the same thing?

    Boeze,
Latest Firmware V4.2.22 for Ultra is at this link:

I wasn't sure what was meant, which is why I asked what the problem was...

Marto shouldn't you already be aware of this? I would have thought you would have come across cases where you needed to hand out the BIOS Update Package add-on to users.

The latest BIOS for the Ultra 2 is from the 2nd of November 2011. You can see the bios version by downloading the logs (Status > Logs > Download all logs), extracting the zip contents and looking at bios_ver.log

The BIOS in a PC controls various things such as which disk to boot from (or in this case the internal flash). You can also configure whether to allow things like rebooting automatically after a power failure etc. The ReadyNAS BIOS is locked down so not as many options are configurable as on a standard PC. You can read more about this here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BIOS

On power on, the BIOS will load what's necessary so that the firmware can be loaded and the NAS can boot. It doesn't need to be updated as often as the firmware. In fact once any bugs with the BIOS are sorted out it shouldn't need any more updates. The ReadyNAS Pro BE/Pioneer still use a BIOS from 2008 as far as I'm aware, and they run the RAIDiator-x86-4.2.22 firmware (released September, 2012) fine.

Yes - which is why it was strange for someone to ask specifically for a bios update.
