a little update...
got ubuntu up and running on a vm.
called around to see if anyone has a device I could rent to dump my data onto - nope (apparently people think you're crazy if you have 3-4TB of data).
called around trying to find a sata card to add to my system nearby - no luck there.
made a desperation run to Best Buy for a sata card - absolutely nothing (wasn't surprised, but 4TB drives sure are cheap).
unfortunately my tower only has 3 sata slots available (one for the boot drive) so it's a bit of a problem.
have been attaching drives and attempting to get vgscan to find the volume.
I don't know if drive order matters, but it was able to identify a volume and that a drive was missing w/ drive 4 attached, so I'll try drives 2, 3 and 4 and see if it works (wasn't even finding a volume w/ 1, 2 and 3 only attached).
that's where it is now...will keep updating.
