Can I upgrade to a newer version of an NV+?

Hi,

After many years, it looks like my ReadyNAS NV+ v1 has bit the dust. Since I have 4-500 GB drives of data on it, I was wondering if I could upgrade to another version of the NV+ line, say v2. I know I can't use the data on the drivers in a current ReadyNAS, but I'm not sure about the different versions of the NV+. I'm hoping I have that flexibility.

Can I do it?

Thanks....Mike

if you are buying 4 new disks, you could also simply do a clean factory reset with the new drives, keeping the old drives set aside (and labeled by slot) as a fall back.

If the boot works, then obviously make a new backup.
  • Today, I'm into the 24th hour of my NV+ re-syncing my original 500GB Samsung, It look like everything should be fine once the rebuild is done. Then I can take my 1 TB Passport drive and backup the whole NAS.

I found the receipt for the Seagate Barracuda, and it's less than 1 year old! I thought Barracudas were good drives, but I guess I was mistaken :( There's not too many drives in the 1-2 TB size that I can use in my NV+; most of the listed drives in the hardware sheet are not available or only have 1 or 2 left in stock. Most of them say that there are new models for these old drives, but I'm afraid to substitute a newer model from the hardware sheet's older model list.

It seems like WD is in my $$$ range and still can be used. So is Hitachi, which I had good luck using, but is more $$$$. I wish I could use a new model, which is sometimes 1/2 the cost, but I don't know how it would work in my NV+ v1, and I don't want to be the 1st to try :)

Anyway, my NV+ is on a road to recovery, in spite of a bad Seagate Barracuda.

    Thanks again to all.

You can RMA the seagate, since it is still covered by seagate's warranty. They will give you a recertified drive, which you could use somewhere else (or as an emergency spare).

The WD10EFRX will work in the v1 (though given the price difference, you might go with the WD20EFRX). The v1 won't use the extra space unless you upgrade all the drives, however it work fine (ignoring the extra 500-1500 GB). These drives are intended for NAS, and have 3 year warranties.
  • Thank you StephenB for that info on the 2 GB WD's, and verifying that I can use them. The prices are normal again so this might be the time to get 4 drives and be done with it.

  • Sorry to add a reply to my own message, but the rebuild of the 500 gb drive is still going on continuously after about 3 days. RAIDar can't get in to give me some kind of status about where in the cycle I am. The display says (in 2 lines):

    Booting...
    Disk 1 sync

I'm in the process of getting at least 3 of those 2 TB NAS drives, but I want to wait until the entire old system has been restored and verified, and I want to make a straight backup to a 1 tb external I have lying around here. Then, I'll start the upgrades with the 2 tb NAS drives. But it would be nice to know the progress of the sync and its approximate end date. I do remember that the NAS was about 3/4 full when I put in the Barracuda.

Thank again to anyone who can help me.

Sounds like there are issues with the resync. It shouldn't take that long. Maybe there is still a disk in the NAS that has issues.
